Pakistan army chief General President Pervez Mussharraf has placed former Prime Minister and current head of the Pakistan People’s Party Benazir Bhutto under house arrest.

Musharraf’s army has received $7 billion in U.S. aid since 2001 and is the third largest customer for military equipment vended by U.S. companies.
And now we see why the Bush regime has been reluctant to retract military aid despite claiming to deplore Musharraf’s imposition of virtual martial law in what purports to be a democratic country: A country in which a strong-arm dictator provokes chaos by constricting civil liberties and then uses military force to keep that chaos barely under control is a very, very good customer for the corporations who are the true rulers of our country under Bush and Cheney.
Same reason we’re still in Iraq: Somebody’s making money from the carnage.
Making money from carnage… hmmm. Sound familiar?

Postscript: YouTube video of a student protest in Pakistan here.
And, here’s today’s soundtrack: Money for the Police [mp3 expired] by The Eat. (Yah, I know, their songs have been in my head a lot these days. You too? Then, show them some love.)
