Black Cat in a Boat

Greetings from the Frederick Douglass Library on the campus of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where I am lucky to be working in sight of this beautiful mural depicting Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and — yes — the black cat of direct action.

Yup, that’s the famous quote — “If there is no struggle there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation are people who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning.” — on the sail between the two abolitionists.

The mural is by Mike Alewitz assisted by Jacqi Warner, Young Ran Shin, Nathan Hays, Marela Zacarias, and Allen Needle. Click here to see it in all its glory.

I’m hard at work on a piece of writing I can’t tell you about yet but will be back with the promised summaries of my AR2007 talks as soon as I get that done.
